Foster is a small country town set amongst the rolling green hills of South Gippsland with a population of approximately 1000 people.  It is a pleasant two-hour (165 km) drive southeast from Melbourne GPO and looks out over Corner Inlet and Wilson's Promontory National Park.

Attractions include camping and walking at beautiful Wilson's Promontory, water sports at Waratah Bay/Sandy Point, picturesque rainforest areas and the usual sporting (tennis, golf, football, netball, basketball) and hobby facilities.

The centre is a custom built practice with pathology next door and a well-equipped procedure room

Clinical

The medical practice looks after a district population of about 7000 people. It covers a large area that includes the holiday destinations Wilson's Promontory and Waratah Bay/Sandy Point. Along with a diverse population, holidaymakers provide a wide array of presentations to the practice and local hospital and give a broad spectrum of challenges to the rural practitioner.

The practice provides medical cover to the South Gippsland Hospital (general medical, A & E, surgical, anaesthetics and obstetrics) as well as servicing the local special accommodation home (30 beds) and nursing home (30 beds). It also has a branch practice in the neighbouring town of Toora (10 km east). 

The hospital has 16 beds with a well-equipped casualty, operating theatre, X-Ray facilities and delivery suite.  A good working relationship with neighbouring hospitals means most conditions can be managed locally or in nearby tertiary centres.  The Foster township has its own ambulance station and is serviced by the local air ambulance.

Hours / After Hours

The weekly roster includes a half to full day off per week and the after-hours roster is equally shared between the associates.

Registrar Conditions

Accommodation provided is a spacious three-bedroom home.  We take our registrar teaching seriously, with appropriate supports and time allocated each week.  The registrar's time is always enjoyable and many of the current partners have been past trainees at Foster.
