Brief description of learning environment
Joint Health Command Medical Centre at RAAF Base East Sale is a general medical centre providing health care to Australian Defence Force members posted to or attached to the RAAF Base. A multi disciplinary team, including doctors, nurse, medicos, dentists, psychologists and a pharmacist provide broard based primary health care to ADF members on the base. The practice is accredited with both the RACGP and ACRRM to provide registrar training to ADF GP registrars in collaboration with other accredited training general practices in the area. It is also involved with Monash University in providing medical student training. Southern GP Training as the responsible RTP for the clinic at RAAF East Sale have been very flexible in recognising RAAF training and experiences towards ADF Registrar training.
Teaching schedule overview
At the beginning of each learning term the registrar and the supervisor negotiate and agree on a learning plan for the term. Additional learning initiatives and outcomes may be added as the term progresses. The plan is reviewed monthly as part of formal learning activities.
Dr. Emonson acts as the primary GP supervisor at this clinic, with Dr. Peters acting as a supporting GP trainer. Formal GP training sessions are conducted on a Tuesday afternoon each week. During the remainder of the week registrars have the opportunity to participate in staff continuation training, attend training programs in local health facilities, participate in training courses and access to supervisors at all times for corridor and case-based discussions.
Supervision arrangements overview
During clinic hours the registrar is supported by his/her supervisor or an alternative either on-site or immediately by phone. After hours registrars are supported by phone advice from a regional senior health advisor and have second line support either by phone or in person by the supervisor.
