Geography & Lifestyle |
|
Churchill is the southernmost town in the Latrobe Valley and is approximately one and half hours drive from central Melbourne. It is easily accessed by the Princes Freeway, which is duplicated through to Traralgon, and by an enhanced train service. The Latrobe Valley is rapidly developing as a modern rural centre with a total population in excess of 90,000 people. Exciting new retail, restaurant and service facilities provide a lifestyle equivalent to that of Melbourne. The population of the Churchill area is approximately 6,500 people. Monash University has developed a large campus in Churchill together with a newly opened (2008) medical school. It is anticipated that Churchill will become a highly significant medical educational focus in the next few years. It is also the home of the Eastern Region of Southern GP Training which makes it easy to access the educational and support facilities offered by the training organisation. The area sports a vast range of recreational activities which can be easily accessed including skiing at Mounts Hotham and Baw Baw, swimming and surfing at the local beaches, bushwalking at Wilson's Promontory and other national parks. The Gippsland Lakes area is a national centre for yachting. There are also fine sporting facilities within Churchill itself. There are a number of excellent educational facilities close by. Government, private and Catholic schools are offered in Churchill and Morwell, as well as in Traralgon, which is 15 minutes away by car. |
Building |
Hazelwood Health Centre is centrally located within the shopping area, and is a purpose designed practice with six medical consulting rooms and an extensive area set aside for psychology and physiotherapy consultations. There are two treatment areas and a pathology specimen area. A large pleasant waiting room looks out onto a well-kept courtyard. |
Clinical |
|
The practice is accredited to the latest RACGP standards. The facilities are fully computerised using Medical Director and are linked receiving downloads from local pathology and radiology. Internet access is provided. The practice is fully equipped to undertake analytical ECG's, computerised spirometry, a range of minor surgical procedures, and can easily provide treatment for unexpected emergencies such as lacerations and fractures. There is a psychologist, physiotherapist, monthly visiting general surgeon and paediatrician who are all keen to support a registrar. We provide audiometric screening by trained staff in our accredited soundproof booth. The patient base is drawn from a diverse population from farming, forestry, mining, engineering, education and other areas, and includes of course the elderly and the very young. |
Teaching |
Hazelwood Health Centre and its staff will provide teaching opportunities and encourage registrars to complete their required activities in accordance with approved learning plans. Appropriate time-off will be provided for registrars to attend teaching sessions and prepare for their Fellowship exams. A full one-to-one teaching programme will be provided by the GP supervisor. |
Hours / After Hours |
The clinic operates from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. weekdays and is open on Saturday mornings. It is anticipated that the registrar will participate in the Saturday morning roster (one in four), but would not be required to undertake after hours responsibilities. |
