Building

The premises are purpose-built and the clinic is well organised.

Clinical

A term at Trafalgar Medical Centre provides an excellent experience of varied rural practice. We have an established relationship with the people of a small rural town and its surrounding rural community. You will find that the clinic staff works as a team and easily enable the GP registrars to feel included and at home.

The practice has a strong commitment to teaching and provides dependable clinical backup for registrars. We provide in-patient care at the nearby public hospital in Warragul, where there is excellent specialist backup.

Hours / After Hours

8.30am - 5.30pm standard clinic hours. On call is one in 3.5 and not arduous.

Registrar Conditions

A delightful self-contained two-bedroom unit is provided.

Brief description of learning environment

Trafalgar hosts medical students, interns and registrars in both years of training. It also hosts registrars undertaking GP obstetric bridging post. Teaching and supervision are fundamental to the practice. All the permanent doctors are actively involved in regional delivery of medical student and registrar education. The registrars are encouraged to take on a teaching role. The practice is set in a sumptuously appointed clinic with friendly staff. We will train you to be one of the demi-gods of general practice. We service a patient population of about 5000, located in Trafalgar and surrounding districts. Medical support is provided to the local Aged Care facility and to West Gippsland Hospital. A 24-hour on-call service is provided, and registrars are involved in this. Trafalgar Medical Centre provides home visits, hospital visits, palliative care, aged care, obstetric care, minor surgical procedures, and a full range of clinic-based GP services. Learners are encouraged to participate in all of these activities. We have a practice nurse available for assistance with clinical issues on a full-time basis, with further nursing support in care-planning, health assessments, and diabetic reviews. Two receptionists are always available. We also have a visiting psychologist and psychiatrist.

Teaching schedule overview

Registrars see their own patient-load, up to four patients/hour, in 3.5 hour consulting sessions. Our educational program is overssen by our Education Coordinator in conjunction with Dr Michael Kunze and Dr James Brown. Bi-weekly one hour teaching sessions occur with a supervisor in both group and one-on-one sessions. There is also the opportunity to undertake joint consultations and supervised procedures. End of session debriefs are provided. Direct and video observation of registrars is performed twice in a six-month rotation. Registrars are released from clinical commitments to attend training activities, including those through SGPT, the Central West Division of GP, and West Gippsland Healthcare Group. Registrars may also elect to visit local health-providers (such as the ACAS team, Palliative Care team or District Nursing service). GPT3/4 regsitrars will be supported with their audit project. Quality assurance and peer review occurs through monthly doctors' meetings. Exam preparation support is provided for more senior registrars. Ongoing informal feedback is provided, with formal feedback occurring at the time of TA visits, and at the end of each six month rotation.

Supervision arrangements overview

Supervision is a core activity of the practice. There is almost always a supervisor onsite and readily available. At all other times a supervisor is available by phone. Supervision is provided on an as-needed basis, as well as regular reviews of clinical cases. Supervision is primarily provided by the tag-team approach of Dr Kunze and Dr Brown. Further onsite supervision is provided by Dr Wong, Dr Worboys and Dr Sterling, who are all experienced vocationally registered GP.
