Geography & Lifestyle |
Orbost has a population of around 3000, the surrounding district adds a further 2500. It lies on the banks of the Snowy River, about 15km from where it flows into the sea near Marlo (a popular tourist resort). There are several National Parks within a short drive from town - including The Alpine, Snowy River, Croajingalong, Lind, Errinundra and Coopracandra. There is State Forest within running distance of town that is easily accessible for sports, sightseeing, horse riding, etc. It is only a short drive to the snowfields and a four-hour drive from both Melbourne and Canberra. The beaches are as good as you will find anywhere - and much more quiet. Apart from people, you might have to share the water with the seals, fairy penguins, dolphins and whales. The waters are also clean and there are big amateur and professional fishing industries - for abalone, sea urchin, crayfish and shark. There are four primary schools in the district and one secondary college. There are several churches. The town caters for most sports and it has an outdoor swimming pool, an indoor sports complex, tennis courts and several outdoor playing fields. |
Building |
Orbost Medical Group is situated right next to the Hospital (Orbost Regional Health). The Clinic was built six years ago by Orbost Regional Health and is presently undergoing major extensions to accommodate our visiting specialists. |
Clinical |
We have several specialists visit our clinic but sometimes we still need to send patients to Bairnsdale or Sale to visit specialists. As a result we are fairly independent. We do our own obstetrics up to and including LUSCS as well as minor sugrey, e.g., carpal tunnels, vasectomies, etc. As the hospital does not have a resident doctor we provide all routine, emergency and after hours care for inpatients and out patients. All Dr's are vocationally registered and have DRANZCOG. Dr's Hay and Ried maintain the CPD required for the obstetric diploma. Dr Hay participates in the anaesthetic CPD. Dr Reid is currently finishing his surgical training. Dr Japhary practices acupuncture. We have a visiting radiographer once a week for routine x-rays and between visits we perform the x-rays ourselves. |
Hours / After Hours |
We work three sessions per week and one weekend in three or four. At weekends we do a ward round each morning at the hospital, a Saturday morning surgery and then provide an on-call service whilst pursuing as much recreational activity as possible. |
Registrar Conditions |
