Geography & Lifestyle |
Bairnsdale is situated on the Mitchell River, close to the Gippsland Lakes, 285 km east of Melbourne, via the Princes Highway. It is an ideal base for water sports, bushwalking and skiing (at Mt. Hotham). There is a TAFE College, with 6,000 students, and two secondary colleges of over 1,000 students. Tourism, agriculture and fishing are the main industries of the area. |
Building |
The clinic moved into a purpose built facility in December 2005. Consisting of a spacious waiting area, twelve consulting rooms, two procedure room, three nursing cubicles, ECG room, modern kitchen/dining area and a large Meeting/Library room. A pathology provider is also on site. Medical records are totally electronic using Medical Director and Zedmed software. Broadband access is available on all workstations. |
Clinical |
The Bairnsdale Hospital has a physician, two surgeons, and five residents (PGY1s) on rotation from Box Hill Hospital. The GP registrar does not have any obstetric or anaesthetic responsibility, but can admit and manage medical patients in the hospital. The local GPs provide all obstetric and anaesthetic services for the hospital, so there is ample opportunity for a registrar to pursue these interests if desired. Our doctors provide extensive support and a wide range of expertise for registrar teaching in areas such as sports medicine, women's health, Koori health, acupuncture and hypnotherapy. |
Hours / After Hours |
The on call roster is one in seven, but another GP will always be 'second on' to provide advice and assistance if required. |
Registrar Conditions |
The other teaching practice in Bairnsdale also takes an advanced GP Registrar. This makes Bairnsdale an ideal choice for those who wish to coordinate their rural term with a partner or friend. The doctors of this practice can offer you the opportunity to experience the full scale of rural medicine in a friendly and supportive environment, while we keep in touch with the next generation of doctors' ideas, needs and expectations. Accommodation is provided in a fully furnished 2 bedroom modern house, close to the hospital, and next door to accommodation for the registrar of the other practice in Bairnsdale. |
