Geography & Lifestyle

Maffra is a rural town with a population of 4,000 and is situated in the centre of a prosperous irrigation district. The township is well served with local sporting facilities, including one of the best gymnastic facilities in the state.  Ninety-mile beach, the Gippsland Lakes and the Victorian high country are all readily accessible for outdoor recreation.  The regional centre of Sale, with a population of 14,000, is 20km south of Maffra. Esso operates the nearby Bass Strait oil fields and Longford gas plant and employs many local residents and sub contractors.  Maffra has State and Catholic primary schools and a Secondary College. There are State and Catholic primary and secondary schools at Sale, as well as Gippsland Grammar (Junior and Senior schools).

Building

Maffra Medical Group is located in a refurbished shopping arcade that was built in 1923.  The consulting rooms are spacious and there is a large well-equipped Procedure room.

Clinical

Maffra Medical Group is fully accredited with AGPAL and provides medical services to Maffra and many of the surrounding towns, including Stratford, Briagolong, Newry and Boisdale.

The practice provides a comprehensive range of general practice services.  These include general consultations booked at four to five per hour, with the flexibility to book long consultations.

Maffra hospital has nine acute beds and is a Campus of Central Gippsland Health Service, Sale.  It no longer provides general surgical or obstetric services. Maffra hospital does not have an Accident and Emergency department and so the practice is equipped to deal with accidents and emergencies.  Equipment includes ECG, cryotherapy, slit lamp, defibrillator, IV equipment and oxygen.  We provide antenatal care in conjunction with specialist and GP obstetricians in Sale.

The practice is also involved with Health Care Plans, acupuncture, complete diabetes and asthma plans and mental health initiatives.

Hours / After Hours

Office hours are 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am to 12 noon Saturday.  After-hours the surgery phone is diverted to the Duty Doctor.  The after-hours roster is shared within the practice.  Patients are generally seen at the rooms but may be seen at the Maffra hospital.  Home visits are also available for patients who are unable to come to the surgery.
