How to Become a Training Practice
BECOMING ACCREDITED AS A TRAINING PRACTICE WITH getGP
getGP is proud of the quality of the training practices used for our registrar placements. Our registrar intake is steadily increasing and we are always on the lookout for Gippsland Practices who are interested in becoming involved in registrar training. New practices not only increase the options for our registrars, they also bring new ideas and a new energy to our organisation.
Being a training practice brings many rewards. Being involved in teaching is a way of maintaining the passion for general practice and keeping clinical skills up to date. Teaching is by facilitation, it means offering your wisdom of experience to the registrar, it does not mean that the supervisor needs to return to the books to teach, the registrar will be doing the book work themselves and can be a source of new information for the supervisor. Registrars will be fresh from the hospital environment and can be a means for bringing the supervisor up to date with the latest hospital based ways of thinking.
getGP provides substantial financial support for practices hosting registrars and in addition there is usually a margin for the practice from the fee for service income generated by the registrar.
Being a supervisor links the supervisor with the network of other supervisors in Gippsland. This network is a vibrant one. Supervisors are funded for four full day workshops a year. These provide professional development for the supervisors’ role as educators. These workshops also provide the means of fostering the collegiality of the group. Many supervisors would consider that being a part of the supervisor network is one of the most valuable features of being a supervisor.
getGP also supports other supervisor professional development and will provide funding for research activity. Many of the current getGP medical educators have come from the supervisor group.
getGP also has a network of practice managers who meet regularly. The practice manager is essential to the process of hosting a registrar.
Our practices are accredited with one or both of the colleges – RACGP and ACRRM.

The visit will take one and a half hours. The visit includes clarification of the expectations of training with the prospective supervisors and the practice manager and a tour of your facility.
- Endorsement by getGP and granting of provisional registration by the College(s)
- Full accreditation - processed after the practice has hosted a registrar for a year. This requires a further visit and an assessment of the ability of the practice and the supervisor to meet the standards required of a training practice.
The process for provisional accreditation can take some months and we suggest you forward your application to us as early in the year as possible. We start the process of allocating registrars to practices early in June for the following year and we are unable to allocate a registrar to an un-accredited practice.
If you have any questions about the accreditation process, please contact linda.kruger@getgp.net.au or phone her on 5132 3100.
